Cast Iron Bridge, Spanish Town, St Catherine

Posted: September 25, 2011 in Buildings or Bridges, St Catherine

The Cast Iron Bridge is a Jamaica National heritage in my estimation. This cast iron bridge was fabricated in England and assembled on site.  It spans the Rio Cobre river.  Designed by Thomas Wilson and errected in 1801.  It is measured free span of 79.5 feet and is 16′-4″ outside width.  It has a rise of 24″ at the center.  The railing pickets are 1.5″ square and are 55″ high, with a spacing of between 5.37″ and 6.25″ centerline.  The North stone abutment posts are 31″ square and 64″ high and the South abutment posts are 30″ square and 68″ high.

There is a stainless placque on the North abutment which credits two locals who contributed to the restoration of the North Bridge Approach.  No mention is made of the errection date of 1801 or credit given to it’s designer Thomas Wilson.
